A aceleração do consumo informativo, moldada por conteúdos descartáveis e de leitura imediata, compromete a construção de sentido e dilui a profundidade da experiência visual. Este artigo propõe uma leitura crítica da obra Desde 1880, de Pietro Gottuso (2021), à luz da literacia visual e da interpretação consciente da imagem. Com base na análise de uma narrativa visual não verbal, em que a sucessão de imagens retrata um mesmo cenário urbano ao longo de 140 anos, investiga-se de que forma esta estrutura desafia o leitor a construir significados a partir de fragmentos visuais. A ausência de texto, aliada ao rigor documental da ilustração, exige um olhar demorado e analítico, promovendo competências de leitura crítica e uma relação ativa com o tempo e a memória social. Com uma abordagem hermenêutica, ancorada na cultura visual e no pensamento crítico, destacam-se como principais contributos o papel da imagem como registo simbólico de transformação histórica e a relevância do livro-álbum enquanto espaço de resistência à superficialidade do olhar. The acceleration of information consumption, shaped by disposable and instantly readable content, undermines the construction of meaning and weakens the depth of visual experience. This article offers a critical reading of Desde 1880, by Pietro Gottuso (2021), through the lens of visual literacy and conscious image interpretation. Based on the analysis of a non-verbal visual narrative, in which a fixed urban scene unfolds over 140 years, it examines how this structure challenges the reader to construct meaning from visual fragments. The absence of text, combined with the documentary precision of the illustrations, demands a slow and analytical gaze, fostering critical reading skills and an active relationship with time and social memory. Grounded in a hermeneutic approach informed by visual culture and critical thinking, the article identifies the image as a symbolic record of historical transformation and the picture book as a space of resistance to the superficiality of contemporary visual perception.
