Atualmente, as Bienais desempenham um papel crucial na divulgação de novas correntes artísticas e na difusão de artistas emergentes, sendo a Bienal de Veneza, fundada em 1895, uma referência global para eventos semelhantes. A nível nacional, a Bienal de Cerveira e a Bienal de Anorezo são eventos fundamentais para a promoção da arte contemporânea em Portugal. Na RAM, contudo, a promoção cultural enfrenta desafios significativos devido à escassez de apoio financeiro e ao fraco interesse local. Ainda que já tenham ocorrido alguns eventos artísticos, é evidente a sua falta de continuidade. Este estudo propõe fomentar a realização de mais eventos artísticos na Região, com o objetivo de compreender os obstáculos específicos e sugerir estratégias para fortalecer a cena artística local. A criação de uma Bienal na RAM poderia integrar a Madeira de forma mais profunda no panorama artístico nacional e internacional, de forma a promover a colaboração com as Ilhas Macaronésicas e enriquecer o intercâmbio cultural e artístico entre ilhas, onde o isolamento geográfico é mais pronunciado. Este estudo identifica desafios e apresenta soluções concretas para impulsionar o desenvolvimento artístico na Região Autónoma da Madeira, contribuindo para uma maior apreciação e divulgação da arte contemporânea portuguesa e insular.In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), there is a noticeable lack of continuity and financial support for artistic initiatives, which hinders the promotion of contemporary art and the creation of a narrative that enhances public appreciation of the visual arts. Currently, biennials play a crucial role in the dissemination of new artistic trends and the promotion of emerging artists, with the Venice Biennale, founded in 1895, serving as a global benchmark for similar events. At the national level, the Cerveira Biennial and the Anorezo Biennial are key events for the promotion of contemporary art in Portugal. In RAM, however, cultural promotion faces significant challenges due to the scarcity of financial support and the lack of local interest. Although some artistic events have taken place, their continuity is evidently lacking. This study proposes to encourage the organization of more artistic events in the region, aiming to understand the specific obstacles and suggest strategies to strengthen the local artistic scene. The creation of a Biennial in Madeira could integrate the island more deeply into the national and international artistic panorama, promoting collaboration with the Macaronesian Islands and enriching cultural and artistic exchange among islands, where geographical isolation is more pronounced.
