Abstract(s)
O presente trabalho de investigação centra-se no estudo de um autor madeirense
do século XX, ainda pouco estudado, Alfredo de Freitas Branco (1890-1962),
conhecido pelo título de Visconde do Porto da Cruz. Jornalista, publicista e escritor, foi
também um homem de causas públicas, tendo abraçado várias ideologias políticas e
doutrinárias, em diferentes fases da sua existência.
O estudo incide, num primeiro momento, nas movimentações desta personalidade
incontornável da cultura contemporânea insular, no seu tempo e espaço, de modo a
compreender o seu percurso de vida, e a formação e desenvolvimento do perfil político
e ideológico. Num segundo momento, procura identificar representações culturais e
identitárias da Madeira na sua escrita, evidenciando o discurso relativo à ilha, através de
uma abordagem da obra de ficção, com particular incidência em O Destino (1915) e A
viagem aventurosa de Suvenine Boliface a Zelstrufs (1934).
Escritas em diferentes etapas do percurso literário do autor, a sua produção
literária revela um cunho autobiográfico, e evoca questões históricas, políticas, sociais,
culturais e identitárias. Deste modo, contribuiu para o conhecimento da identidade
madeirense da primeira metade do século XX, fomentando uma reflexão acerca da
atualidade de algumas situações retratadas.
This research paper focuses on the study of a little-studied 20th century Madeiran author, Alfredo de Freitas Branco (1890-1962), known by the title of Viscount of Porto da Cruz. A journalist, publicist and writer, he was also a man of public causes, having embraced various political and doctrinal ideologies at different stages of his life. The study focuses, firstly, on the movements of this inescapable personality of contemporary island culture, in his time and space, in order to understand his life path, and the formation and development of his political and ideological profile. Secondly, it seeks to identify cultural and identity representations of Madeira in his writing, highlighting the discourse relating to the island, through an approach to his works of fiction, with a particular focus on O Destino (1915) and A viagem aventurosa de Suvenine Boliface a Zelstrufs (1934). Written at different stages of the author's literary career, his work is autobiographical and evokes historical, political, social, cultural and identity issues. In this way, he has contributed to an understanding of Madeiran identity in the first half of the 20th century, encouraging reflection on the relevance of some of the situations portrayed.
