- The athlete’s perception of parents behaviors in sport context: a study in youth handball players of the Madeira Handball AssociationPublication . Sousa, Duarte; Sousa, Duarte; Cardoso, Américo; Ramos Cardoso, Américo; Rodrigues, Ana; Rodrigues, Ana; Noite, João; Lopes, Helder; Fernando, Catarina; Fernando, Catarina; Prudente, João; Prudente, João FilipeThe participation of parents in their children's sports is very important. However, many parents end up having negative and deviant behaviours in sports and social context, generating this participation some controversy and misunderstandings. With this study, we intend to assess the perception of the athletes about the behaviour of the parents in the sport context, considering the demographic characteristics of the athletes (gender and age). The sample is composed by young handball players from the Madeira Handball Association, aged 9-16 years of both sexes (n=284, male n=122, female n=162) registered by ten clubs and with a minimum of one year of organized sports practice. For the collection of data, a questionnaire previously constructed and duly validated was used. The results confirm the perception of the role of parents in supporting their children 's sports practices, as well as motivating them for the sport. There is also a perception of the young players of a pressure exerted by the parents in obtaining immediate results and little appreciation of the progress of learning.
- Collaboration meets interactive surfaces (CMIS): walls, tables, mobiles, and wearablesPublication . Anslow, Craig; Campos, Pedro; Grisoni, Laurent; Lucero, Andres; Pereira Campos, Pedro FilipeThis workshop proposes to bring together researchers who are interested in improving collaborative experiences through the combination of multiple interaction surfaces with diverse sizes and formats, ranging from large-scale walls, to tables, mobiles, and wearables. The opportunities for innovation exist, but the ITS, CHI, CSCW, and other HCI communities have not yet thoroughly addressed the prob lem of bringing effective collaboration activities together using multiple interactive surfaces, especially in complex work domains. Of particular interest is the potential synergy that one can obtain by effectively combining different-sized surfaces and sharing information between devices.
- Exploring the creative process in a brainstorming session to develop a web-based system for idea selectionPublication . Rodrigues, Ana; Honório, David; Cabral, Diogo; Campos, Pedro F.; Pereira Campos, Pedro FilipeBetting on new and promising ideas is fundamental for innovation in various sectors, helping the world that faces so many adversi ties. To increase these ideas, the stages of evaluation and selection of ideas in the creative processes need to be improved and not neglected. To minimize this problem and contribute to the scien tific advance in the creativity-oriented HCI, we present a tool for selecting ideas used after brainstorming sessions. Our prototype is inspired by the conclusions of an observational study that we conducted with six students in a classroom, in which the students’ objective was to plan the making of a video for a social institution that helps the neediest people.
- Fair play: the perception of the young handball players on the parent´s behaviorPublication . Sousa, Duarte; Cardoso, Américo; Ramos Cardoso, Américo; Rodrigues, Ana; Noite, João; Lopes, Helder; Lopes, Helder; Fernando, Catarina; Prudente, João; Prudente, João FilipeIn recent years, the deviant and negative behaviours of parents during follow-up in their children's sports practice have reached alarming proportions in various sports. This increase may be associated with greater participation of parents, both in the presence in games and in training. With this study, we intend to assess the perception of the athletes about the behaviour of the parents in the sports context, namely in relation to fair play. The sample consisted of young handball players from the Madeira Handball Association, aged 9- 16 years of both genders (n = 284, male n = 122, female n = 162) registered by ten clubs and with a minimum of one year of organized sports practice. For the data collection, a questionnaire previously constructed and duly validated was used. In this study were used descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), chi square and Spearman correlations. The statistical program used was SPSS v.25.0 and the level of significance was 5%.The results confirm that the athletes consider positive the presence of their parents, however, the results point to a perception of inadequate behaviours of the parents regarding the referees, mainly by the boys. It was found that the younger the athletes are the greater is the perception of the enthusiastic support of the parents, the greater the volume of instructions to the field, and the perception of a greater emotional discontent of the parents in relation to the problems and incidents of the game and training.
- How do motivational text messages impact motivation to exercise?Publication . Duro, Ligia; Campos, Pedro F.; Romão, Teresa; Karapanos, Evangelos; Pereira Campos, Pedro Filipe; Karapanos, EvangelosWe study the motives of regular and non-regular exercisers’ engagement with motivational text messages and the importance individuals attribute to visual presentation. A total of 160 individuals were surveyed (80 regular exercisers and 80 non regular exercisers). We found regular exercisers use motivational text messages in order to encourage their exercise routine. Non regular exercisers use motivational text messages mainly to try to boost their exercise motivation. Individuals, independent of their exercise profile, prefer to see motivational text messages presented in a mixed way, sometimes as text-only and sometimes embedded in a visual presentation. Participants reported that an aesthetically appealing visual presentation helps instill a positive feeling regarding the text, and the visual presentation was considered as important as the textual content. We conclude with a number of implications for the design of activity trackers.
- How does the visual aesthetics of positively-framed messages impact their motivational capacity?Publication . Duro, Ligia; Romão, Teresa; Karapanos, Evangelos; Campos, Pedro; Karapanos, Evangelos; Pereira Campos, Pedro FilipeMany people nowadays engage with motivational text messages embedded in a visual presentation. However, empirical studies of the impact of textual messages on users’ motivation to exercise have paid little attention to how their visual appeal impacts their motivational capacity. We conducted an online experiment to explore the impact of visual aesthetics on the motivational capacity of positively-framed textual messages. Participants were assigned to three conditions: positively-framed messages a) presented as text-only (no-aesthetics), b) presented with high visual appeal (beautiful), and c) presented with low visual appeal (ugly). Contrary to our expectations, the perceived visual appeal of a message show no impact on its motivational capacity in terms of how motivating it was perceived to be, nor on extrinsic identified behavior regulation. The implications of these results on the design of interactive systems, and physical activity trackers in particular, are discussed herein.
- The importance of attitudes and values in sport and competition: the opinion of a group of coaches of volleyballPublication . Ximenes, Marcela Dantas; Rodrigues, Ana José Aguiar; Rodrigues, Ana; Silva, Jefferson Jurema; Prudente, João Filipe Pereira Nunes; Prudente, João FilipeBehaviours of children and young people in sport are influenced by the attitudes and behaviours of adults. Behaviours related to fair play, respect for others and rules, conveyed through coaches' example are important, at a time when young people are his own identity, tending to identify with figures such as coaches and where the maxim "does what I say and not what I do" does not work. The objective of the study was to identify the importance that coaches attribute to values and attitudes in sport, and to study the association between the trainer's biographical characteristics and the relevance of these values and attitudes in sport and competition. A total of 30 volleyball coaches (21 men and 9 women) were interviewed, with a mean age of 39.23 ± 10.57 years. To collect information on the selection criteria, we used the survey adapted from Cardoso, (2007). The study project was approved by the scientific committee of the Department of Physical Education and Sport and ethics committee of the State University of Amazonas. For the analysis of the data, mean and standard deviation statistics were used. In the normality of the variables, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used and the association between variables was the Chi-square test for qualitative variables and Spearman correlations in quantitative variables. T-Student was used to determine differences between groups in variables with normal distribution. Most of the Amazon coaches attach significant importance to all factors related to values and attitudes in sport and competition among young children.
- M-dimensions: a framework for evaluating and comparing interactive installations in museumsPublication . Gonçalves, Lígia; Campos, Pedro; Sousa, Margarida; Pereira Campos, Pedro FilipeDesigning and evaluating digital interactive experiences for museums requires scrupulous attention to every aspect that contributes to an engaging and rich learning experience. The evaluation of interactive installations in museums is a very demanding endeavor due to the intersection of multi ple research fields, such as human computer interaction, design and multimedia, museum studies, audience research, etc. In this paper we introduce a novel framework with ten di mensions for guiding the design and evaluation of interac tive installations, specifically tailored to museums. The conception of the framework was based on current usability evaluation methods and principles as well as museology literature. It was then iteratively refined and finally validat ed with and a long-term study about interactivity in all the interactive museums of a specific geographic region. The results obtained emphasize the importance of adopting the proposed framework for future research on interactive museums evaluation.
- MementoKey: keeping passwords in mindPublication . Jeong, Bongkeum ; Vallat, Alexander; Csikszentmihalyi, Chris ; Park, Junwu ; Pacheco, Dulce; Pacheco, DulceIn this paper, we introduce a novel system of password generation, MementoKey, consisting of private words that exist only in a user’s memory and a corresponding set of public (non-secret) words that will facilitate users’ recall of the private words, which they are associated with. We will demonstrate how MementoKey offers a useful alternative to existing options for storing passwords in password managers, or to using cryptographically weak, but memorable, passwords. We have conducted a user study to evaluate the word-association technique for recalling passwords, and the effectiveness of our prototype software training and checking system to guide the user successfully through the memorization process. Our study involving 60 diverse participants indicates that our prototype can effectively lead users through a visualization and memorization technique to create a strong word-association memory between pairs of adjectives and nouns.
- Methodological approach to evaluate interactive behaviors in team games: an example in handballPublication . Prudente, João; Garganta, Júlio; Anguera, M. Teresa; Prudente, João Filipebehaviors in Team Games, most precisely goalkeeper interaction with defenders. The aim of this study is to understand the performance of a handball goalkeeper, not only by the results of their own actions, but by integrating in the model the interactive actions between goalkeeper and defenders. The requirements of observational methodology are observed to gather data and we used sequential analysis and polar coordinates techniques to analyze data. The data are gathered from a natural environment where players have their behaviors, i.e., from handball matches in high level competitions context. Using an observational tool specially created and validated by an expert panel, the data was registered in a sequential way to make possible the sequential analysis with lags, prospective and retrospectively made. The results show the goalkeeper performance is significantly associated with defenders actions.
