- How workstyle transitions influence the tools' perceptions of usePublication . Campos, Pedro
- User-Centered CASE Tools for User-Centered Information SystemsPublication . Campos, PedroThe goal of this research is to design and evaluate a new generation of CASE tools, capable of clearly supporting all the styles of work adopted by teams of developers and capable of promoting Usability concerns to Informa tion Systems building. Our research approach is based on (a) creating usable and effective models of the developers behavior, and (b) building innovative, unconstrained collaborative prototypes that allow co-authoring of models by all stakeholders involved (programmers, marketers and interaction designers).
- Designing an interactive forest through sensor-based installationsPublication . Dória, André; Campos, Pedro; Fernandes, EmanuelWe describe the design approach of an interactive exhibition called "The Interactive Laurissilva". The exhibition is about Madeira Island's endemic forest, and is composed of 15 sensor-based interactive installations. We discuss the interaction styles that were adopted, reflecting upon the ethnographic observation of visitors and we summarize the lessons learned.
- SMART: a system of augmented reality for teaching 2nd grade studentsPublication . Freitas, Rubina; Campos, PedroIn this paper, we describe the design and evaluation of SMART, an educational system that uses augmented reality for teaching 2nd grade-level concepts, adequate and integrated with national curriculum guidelines. SMART puts children exploring concepts like means of transportation, types of animals and similar semantic categories through the use of a set of racquets that are used to manipulate a TV-show style game with 3D models which are superimposed to the real time video feed of the whole class. Experiments were performed with several classes of students in three different, local primary schools. Results suggest that SMART is effective in maintaining high levels of motivation among children, and also that SMART has a positive impact on the students’ learning experience, especially among the weaker students.
- Designing for workstyle transitions: interaction design tools for software engineeringPublication . Campos, Pedro Filipe Pereira
- Task-driven tools for requirements engineeringPublication . Campos, Pedro Filipe PereiraThis research aims at designing and evaluating a new generation of usable and multimodal Require ments and Analysis Tools, capable of promoting arti fact co-evolution in a useful manner, enabling coop eration and communication of multiple stakeholders over a common semantic model. The main goal is to leverage the elicitation of functional and non functional requirements by using multimodal interac tion techniques, and driving software development using a conceptual architecture easily extracted from user task flows.
- CanonSketch and TaskSketch: innovative modeling tools for usage-centered designPublication . Constantine, Larry; Campos, PedroTwo experimental tools to support usage-centered design using essential use cases and canonical abstract prototypes are described. The models and methods of usage-centered design are outlined and the new tools are described briefly.
- Abalearn: a risk-sensitive approach to self-play learning in AbalonePublication . Campos, Pedro; Langlois, ThibaultThis paper presents Abalearn, a self-teaching Abalone pro gram capable of automatically reaching an intermediate level of play without needing expert-labeled training examples, deep searches or ex posure to competent play. Our approach is based on a reinforcement learning algorithm that is risk seeking, since defensive players in Abalone tend to never end a game. We show that it is the risk-sensitivity that allows a successful self-play training. We also propose a set of features that seem relevant for achiev ing a good level of play. We evaluate our approach using a fixed heuristic opponent as a bench mark, pitting our agents against human players online and comparing samples of our agents at different times of training.
- Towards useful and usable interaction design tools: CanonSketchPublication . Campos, Pedro; Nunes, NunoDespite all the effort dedicated to bringing better User-Centered Design (UCD) tools to market, current studies show that the industry is still dominated by tools that do not support the activities and workstyles of designers. Also, there is a growing need for interaction design tools aimed at software engineers, a problem related to bringing usability into the software engineering processes. We propose a new workstyle model that can be effectively used to envision, design and evaluate a new generation of innovative interaction and software design tools, aimed at integrating usability and software engineering. We illustrate the effectiveness of our model by describing a new tool, called CanonSketch, that was built in order to support UCD in terms of the dimensions in our workstyle model. We also describe an evaluation study aimed at contrasting paper prototyping with our tool as well as the level of workstyle support.
