Abstract(s)
a alguns territórios arquipelágicos desta área geográfica atlântica.
Given its importance in the area of Regional and Local Studies, the main purpose of this work was to analyze the presence of the toponym “Fajã” in Macaronesia. The intention is to find out if this toponym is a linguistic heritage common to all territories that can be included in the designation of “Macaronesia” or, just to some archipelagic territories of this Atlantic geographical area. This study aims to contribute to a broader clarification of the concept of “fajã”. It seeks greater dissemination, understanding and, above all, appreciation, taking into account the importance of the toponym. It revises its definition in order to recognize its richness in historical and cultural terms. The toponym “Fajã” has been present in these archipelagos for several centuries. It is common in all Macaronesian archipelagos. It is strongly related to agricultural practice, which was essential for the settlement and, obviously, the survival of people, in particular the first settlers of these islands. This can be seen in the study of the names attributed to the fajãs, whose comparative analysis is undertaken at the level of Linguistic Heritage.
