A freguesia da Boaventura / Boa Ventura, situada no concelho de São Vicente, na
costa norte da ilha da Madeira, é um território marcado por uma paisagem natural singular
e uma identidade cultural profunda. Este estudo visa valorizar o seu património, com
especial enfoque na toponímia, e esclarecer a dualidade gráfica do seu topónimo:
“Boaventura” ou “Boa Ventura”. A investigação assenta numa metodologia mista,
integrando a análise documental e a bibliográfica com a recolha de dados orais, através
de entrevistas e questionário. A partir do cruzamento dessas fontes, foi elaborado um
levantamento toponímico bastante completo da freguesia, em que a área habitada foi
categorizada segundo a taxonomia de Maria Amaral Dick. A análise evidenciou a
toponímia como reflexo da geografia, da flora e das tradições agrícolas locais. Quanto à
grafia do topónimo, os dados recolhidos indicam que, embora ambas as formas tenham
coexistido ao longo do tempo, “Boaventura” se afirma como a forma predominante e
mais consolidada. Este trabalho contribui para a preservação do património linguístico e
cultural da freguesia, reforçando o papel da toponímia na construção da identidade
e da memória coletivas.
The parish of Boaventura / Boa Ventura, located in the municipality of São Vicente on the north coast of Madeira Island, is a territory marked by a unique natural landscape and a deep cultural identity. This study aims to highlight its heritage, with a special focus on toponymy, and to clarify the graphic duality of its name: “Boaventura” or “Boa Ventura.” The research is based on a mixed methodology, combining documentary and bibliographic analysis with the collection of oral data through interviews and a questionnaire. By cross-referencing these sources, a comprehensive toponymic survey of the parish was carried out, with the inhabited area categorized according to Maria Amaral Dick’s taxonomy. The analysis revealed that the toponymy reflects the local geography, flora, and agricultural traditions. Regarding the spelling of the toponym, the collected data indicate that, although both forms have coexisted over time, “Boaventura” stands out as the predominant and more consolidated form. This work contributes to the preservation of the parish’s linguistic and cultural heritage, reinforcing the role of toponymy in the construction of collective identity and memory.
