constituições, regimentos e outros documentos diocesanos orientadores.
e as tradições.
Pastoral visitations are a working instrument for prelates to reach the parishes, including both clergy and faithful. They are the fruit of the Church’s historical experience over the centuries. Visitations assist in the application of universal norms, alongside con stitutions, regulations and other guiding diocesan documents. It was through the Council of Trent that the use of these means was requested to help reform, instruct in doctrine, and exercise the episcopal ministry for the salvation of souls. Each visitation serves a pastoral function: to help organize, instruct, and correct. There is a specific procedure when visiting a parish or institution. The realization of the visit begins with a public edict, resulting in an inquiry that calls for denunciations. This is followed by the visit of the prelate or his visitor (visitador), accompanied by a delegation. During the visit, moral, spiritual, and material inspection is carried out, including the verification of assets and visits to cemeteries, chapels, churches, and parochial residences. In each parish, there must be a registry book for the visitations, in which attention is drawn to various details. Certain situations are noted to ensure that specific aspects are improved or corrected, un der penalty of fine or excommunication. Following the visit, prelates gather extensive information regarding the clergy, the faithful, the localities, customs and traditions. The present study focuses on the Livro (Primeiro) dos Provimentos das Visitações da Igreja de São Iohão da Faiam da Ovelha, a manuscript produced by various hands during the 16th until the 18th centuries. The aim is to highlight its contribution to the study of Lin guistic Heritage, specifically the Portuguese language during the Classical Portuguese phase. For this purpose, selected letters – provisions (provimentos), resulting from the visits made “personally” by Bishop D. Luis de Figueiredo de Lemos, are transcribed and analyzed.
