Resumo(s)

Narrative therapy explores narrated stories and how they can influence well-being. Therapeutic photography is a method that activates significant emotional responses and individual insight. The combination of both (narrative and photography) promotes self-knowledge, self-expression, reconstruction of narratives and development of new meanings. This research consists of an analysis of narratives obtained through previously captured photographs. The objective is to explore how therapeutic photography can be understood in terms of structure, content and narrative process associated with photography. Included a sample of 17 narratives analysed with the methodology proposed by Gonçalves, Henriques, Alves, & Rocha (2001. Manual de avaliação do processo e complexidade narrativa. Universidade do Minho), Gonçalves, Henriques, Alves, & Soares (2002a. Analyzing structure, process and content in narratives of patients diagnosed with agoraphobia. International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology, 2(3), 389–406), and Gonçalves, Henriques, Soares, & Monteiro (2002b. Manual de avaliação do conteúdo e multiplicidade narrativa. Universidade do Minho). The results show that narratives associated with photographs increase fluidity in self-knowledge and confidence in sharing more painful moments and metaphors.
