A presente dissertação de mestrado analisa o papel do humor na literatura
infantojuvenil principalmente na Literatura Portuguesa do século XX, considerando as
influências do séc. XIX, não apenas como fonte de entretenimento, mas também como
veículo eficaz para a transmissão de valores e lições de vida. Este estudo explora a
evolução do humor neste género literário, destacando figuras influentes que moldaram a
sua trajetória ao longo do tempo. Neste contexto, serão analisadas três obras marcantes
da literatura infantil portuguesa: Graças e Desgraças da Corte de El-Rei Tadinho, de
Alice Vieira, obra na qual a autora utiliza um humor subtil e irónico para narrar as
peripécias da corte do fictício El-Rei Tadinho; A Família Que Não Cabia Dentro de Casa,
de Alexandre Honrado, apresenta um humor mais dinâmico e visual, repleto de situações
absurdas e personagens caricatas; A Montanha da Água Lilás, de Pepetela, uma fábula
mordaz para todas as idades. A análise destas obras permitirá identificar diferentes
abordagens e técnicas humorísticas na literatura infantil, além de compreender como o
humor pode ser utilizado para envolver leitores jovens e transmitir mensagens
importantes de forma lúdica. Este estudo pretende não só mapear a trajetória do humor
na literatura infantojuvenil, mas também evidenciar a riqueza e a diversidade das
narrativas humorísticas na formação do imaginário e na educação das crianças.
This master’s dissertation analyzes the role of humor in children’s and young adult literature, focusing mainly on 20th-century Portuguese Literature while considering 19th-century influences, not only as a source of entertainment but also as an effective vehicle for the transmission of values and life lessons. The study explores the evolution of humor within this literary genre, highlighting influential figures who have shaped its trajectory over time. In this context, three landmark works of portuguese children’s literature are analyzed: Graças e Desgraças da Corte de El-Rei Tadinho by Alice Vieira, the author employs subtle and ironic humor to recount the misadventures of the court of the fictional King Tadinho; A Família Que Não Cabia Dentro de Casa by Alexandre Honrado showcases a more dynamic and visual humor, brimming with absurd situations and caricatured characters; A Montanha da Água Lilás by Pepetela, presents a mordant fable suitable for all ages. The analysis of these works enables the identification of different approaches and humorous techniques in children’s literature, as well as an understanding of how humor can be used to engage young readers and convey important messages playfully. This study aims not only to chart the development of humor in children’s and young adult literature but also to demonstrate the richness and diversity of humorous narratives in shaping the imagination and education of children.
