Abstract(s)
In the last decades, social, cultural, political and educational changes have produced around the concept of family and, consequently, in the roles and functions of each family member. Currently, male parents take a more active role in their children's lives. The present study aimed to analyze the involvement of parents in their children's lives and parent-child communication. A sample of 151 male parents (M=40.28, SD=6.58) of children aged between 6 and 12 years was collected. For this purpose, a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Perception Scale of Parenting Communication-Fathers Version (COMPA-P) and the Inventory of Father Involvement–Short Form (IEP-VR) were used. The results indicate that fathers consider themselves involved in their children's lives, however some factors still conditioning this involvement, namely the working day. In addition, although more involved in the various activities of their children's lives, fathers continue to play a main role as a financial provider within the family, preserving traditional characteristics of fatherhood. Communication proves to be a key process in the father-child relationship, with positive and high correlations with paternal involvement. These findings have practical and theoretical implications for professionals working with families will be discussed.
