Abstract(s)
The study focuses on the theme of freedom and utopia, in the past and today. This research aims to open new reading paths for the literary works studied, paying particular attention to the following books: A Utopia, by Thomas More, Sermão de Santo António aos Peixes, by António Vieira, A Ilustre Casa de Ramires, by Eça de Queirós, and A liberdade de pátio, by Mário de Carvalho. The following research analyses how literary and historical sciences are related, and how they may work as complementarity and support the transmission of knowledge, understanding and thinking on human behaviour. The narratives are characterized by enigma, metaphorical and allegoric refinement, and by the critics at a society victimized by cultural crisis. The analysis also allows the possibility of exploring how human race coexists within a threatened society.
