Abstract(s)
This dissertation focuses on the theme of Insularity or the study of the Islands and any marks that distinguish them from other parts of land or from continental plates. To this end, it problematizes concepts such as "Nissology"; "Place and Space", "Identity", "Islander", among others, which will be developed during this investigation. In order to analyse those problems, we start from a literary work, O Último Cais, by Helena Marques, with the objective of investigating eventual marks that can confirm the existence of an insular identity, in this particular case, Madeira, in the last half of the 19th century and the beginnings of the 20th century, establishing links with the 21st century, in order to emphasize the differences and development of the island. Starting from geography, science that allows us to identify the islands and differentiate them from the continents, other aspects are also called for this research such as historic, economic, social ones, as well as various topics that allow us to reflect on the issue of insularity in Madeira Island, with particular focus on the presence of the sea, a primordial element that permanently accompanies the Islands and gives them various meanings.
