Este texto pretende debater a potencialidade expressiva da paisagem insular enquanto
objeto fílmico. A geografia madeirense, aqui desdobrada em dois filmes, pressupõe uma
insularidade balizada pela linha costeira, onde a terra se submerge e predomina a vastidão do mar.
O objeto desta análise reside na comparação de duas obras audiovisuais realizadas no arquipélago
da Madeira, separadas por quase cinquenta anos: um filme de longa-metragem, rodado no Porto
Santo, e uma curta-metragem em vídeo, rodada na Madeira. Em ambos encontramos uma paisagem
demarcada pela fluidez oceânica. E em ambos se desenvolve a narrativa do naufrágio: consumado
num dos filmes e eminente no outro. Para contextualizar esta comparação, será abordada também
a potencialidade documental, narrativa simbólica da imagem em movimento, e em particular dos
filmes que exploram o conceito de ilha distante e solitária, sob um ponto de vista fenomenológico.
This paper intends to discuss expressive potential of insular landscapes as a filmic object. Madeiran geography, here revealed in two films, supposes insularity marked by the coastline, where land is submerged, and the vastness of the sea prevails. The aim of this analysis is to compare two audiovisual pieces made in Madeira, detached from each other by almost fifty years: a feature film, shot in Porto Santo, and a video short film, shot in Madeira. In both we may find a landscape defined by the fluidity of the ocean; and both develop the narrative of wreck: accomplished in one of the films and imminent in the other one. In order to put in context, we will also address documentary potential, symbolic and narrative of the moving image and, in particular, focused on films that explore the concept of distant and lonely islands, from a phenomenological point of view.
