Abstract(s)
The cherry culture in Jardim da Serra represents a unique cultural heritage, derived from the natural. Its cultural, immaterial and linguistic richness deserves our study. Both men and women engage in this type of production, professionally and in family context. We intend to safeguard those memories, experiences, customs, traditions and languages (sung / spoken) of the cherry growers of Jardim da Serra. Given the need to preserve and heighten this type of heritage, both local and regional, a collection essentially of linguistic properties about the cherry was made. We have also compiled a glossary of entries from informants and from the consulted bibliography. Presenting a brief collection of songs, legends, poetry and recipes, this research focus on the geographical area of Jardim da Serra due to being the largest cherry producing locality on the island of Madeira. With the aim to emphasize the importance of the cherry culture in the various fields it integrates: historical-cultural, social, economic and, mainly, linguistic. We intend to transmit to future generations the cultural and linguistic legacy associated with the cherry culture in the parish of Jardim da Serra.
