do interior, distante do centro urbano.
This dissertation investigates a region located in the interior of Portugal through the relationship between two distinct areas, literature and medicine, from the perspective of Fernando Namora, a doctor-writer who conveyed some of his professional experiences – Medicine – through the works he wrote – Literature. This research focuses, in particular, on the work Retalhos da vida de um Médico, published in 1949, which narrates the beginning of the experience of a young recent medical graduate in a province in the interior of mainland Portugal - Monsanto, Beira Baixa. The practice of his profession and his contact with provincial life reveal to the reader the problems that the population faces on a daily basis, especially because they live in an inland region, far from the urban centre. Several criticisms of the political system of the time are pointed out. In addition to a detailed description of the economic environment and living conditions of the inhabitants of a region in the interior of Portugal, Fernando Namora points out several criticisms of the political system of the time, which tended to forget the regions that were outside the urban areas.
