Oriente e Ocidente em perspetiva: a imagem da mulher oriental na literatura portuguesa quinhentista

| dc.description.abstract | Tem-se como principal objetivo desta dissertação, o estudo analítico da figura feminina oriental na ótica da literatura de viagem portuguesa do século XVI. Durante a época dos Descobrimentos, Fernão Mendes Pinto, Tomás Pires, Duarte Barbosa, Frei João dos Santos, António Tenreiro, Frei Gaspar da Cruz e muitos outros definiram a literatura Quinhentista, através dos relatos de viagem pelo mundo oriental. Falamos de um Oriente que inclui a Ásia Central, o Extremo Oriente, o Oriente Médio, a Ásia Setentrional e Meridional. Através desses viajantes pudemos contactar com o Outro, explorar novas culturas e tradições e questionar a verdade das coisas até então só imaginadas. Com base neste facto, investigar-se-á essas culturas e tradições, representadas pela sexualidade, a beleza, o comportamento e a vivência da mulher oriental, e que estão implícitas nos relatos de viagem do século XVI. Para isso recorrer-se-á, para além de produções literárias de viagem quinhentistas, a obras de premissa antropológica, teológica e psicológica, de modo a comprovar o que os viajantes relataram, na História das civilizações e culturas do Oriente. Esta relação literatura-cultura entre o Oriente e o Ocidente colocará em causa a universalidade do conceito de Orientalismo, de Edward B. Said. Desta forma, provar-se-á a relação existente entre esse conceito e a perceção que o ocidental tinha do espaço Oriental (através do estudo comparativo que acima referimos) no século XVI, recriando ou teorizando, se necessário, uma preconceção de Orientalismo digna do período quinhentista. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | As the main purpose of this dissertation is the analytic study of the eastern woman, from the point of view of Portuguese travelling literature during the 16th century. During the time of the Discoveries, Fernão Mendes Pinto, Tomás Pires, Duarte Barbosa, Frei João dos Santos, António Tenreiro, Frei Gaspar da Cruz, and many others defined sixteenth century literature, through travel reports through the Eastern world. We are talking about an Orient that includes Central Asia, the Far East, the Middle East, Northern and Southern Asia. Through these travelers, we were able to encounter the Other, explore new cultures and traditions and question the truth of things that until then had only been imagined. Based on this, we will investigate these cultures and traditions, represented by the sexuality, beauty, behavior and experience of oriental women, which are implicit in 16th century travel accounts. In order to do this, in addition to 16th century travel literature, anthropological, theological and psychological works will be used to prove what the travellers reported in the history of the civilizations and cultures of the East. This literature-culture relationship between East and West will challenge the universality of Edward B. Said's concept of Orientalism. In this way, we will prove the relationship between this concept and the Western perception of the Oriental space (through the comparative study mentioned above) in the 16th century, recreating or theorizing, if necessary, a preconception of Orientalism worthy of the 16th century period. | pt_PT |
