do século XX.
social, do desajuste cultural e do preconceito.
This master's thesis delves into the life and work of Madeiran writer Carlos Martins, highlighting his relevance in Madeiran literature of the 20th century. It analyses the remarkable moments in the writer's life, the trips he took, and his unique way of life, picking up on the overlap that can be identified between his personal life and his work. Two of his novels, A Grande PaixĂŁo do Padre Abel Cain and O Grande Amor da IrmĂŁ Elsa, are at the core of this dissertation and will serve as a basis to characterize Madeira in the 20th century from a social and cultural standpoint, specifically during the fifties and sixties. They reveal some of the island's social and cultural complexities. Carlos Martins's fiction shows a bright and cosmopolitan Funchal that feels antonymous with the rural areas of Madeira, poor and separated from the urban center due to lack of resources. It draws light to the hypocrisy, envy, and cynicism that characterize most social relations. This thesis proposes that the worldview of a time and society, as written down in literature, represents contemporary social stratification, cultural maladjustment, and prejudice. The author's depiction of a conservative, atavistic, and conflicted society is taken to signify social prejudices of his time, social experiences, and mentalities.
