do sistema insular.
The increase in waste production, driven by population growth, tourism, and consumption patterns, poses a significant challenge for island regions. These areas, characterized by geographical limitations, resource scarcity, and high environmental vulnerability, require innovative and sustainable solutions for effective waste management. This study analyzes how sustainable design can support the creation of a smart waste management system on Madeira island. The research examines the current waste management scenario in the region, identifying specific challenges such as transport logistics, limited infrastructure, community awareness, and human behavior. To this end, it uses a mixed approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis of data collected in interviews with the population and with entities responsible for waste management. Based on the principles of sustainable design and the use of applied technologies, the research seeks to propose solutions that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of waste management, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. Through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates design, technology, and sustainability, the aim is not only to mitigate environmental impacts but also to promote circular economy practices, encourage local community involvement, and strengthen the resilience of the island system. The expected results include the development of strategic guidelines that respond to the challenges faced by Madeira Island and that can be adapted to other island contexts with similar problems.
