Abstract(s)
Contudo, a
faltas injustificadas são preditores significativos do insucesso escolar.
Indiscipline has been a subject of great importance for Portuguese education. Also, academic failure is an ascending study theme. Literature supports the idea that there is a relationship between indiscipline and academic performance. However, the scarcity of studies that focus the relationship between the previous subjects and the disciplinary actions taking place does not help the finding of new strategies to promote academic achievement. Therefore, the main objetive was to determine if there was a relationship between indiscipline, disciplinary measures and academic achievement and the impact to the reality of Madeira Autonomous Region. The sample consisted in 396 subjects, 71% males and 29% females, ages 9 to 17, all included in the project “Capacitação de Alunos da RAM” being developed by the region educational services. Results showed that, for the gender variable, there are statistically significant differences; boys revealed greater indiscipline than girls, as well as school underachievement. Regarding the age variable, there were higher levels of indiscipline in older students. Finally, the data showed that there were significant relationships between the three main variables of the study, and the number of disciplinary participations and unjustified absences are significant predictors of academic performance decline.
