Abstract(s)
A espiritualidade
têm uma correlação positiva; o sexo feminino apresenta uma média superior nas crenças;
Positive Psychology has made researchers shift their studies to more positive aspects of life such as spirituality and optimism. Spirituality is an important dimension to human beings and provides a sense of hope and security. Through spirituality comes up mindfulness which means being conscious or aware of something and is a practice that promotes management of positive and negative emotional states. Optimism is also fundamental and has a meaningful influence in our lives because it’s a concept that’s associated to a more positive outlook on life specially when facing adversity. The research was carried out with the goal to examine spirituality and optimism in higher education, more specifically about teachers, students and staff. The methodology was quantitative and transversal with a convenience sample that included 326 participants. The instruments used were the Scale of Spirituality by Pinto and Pais-Ribeiro (2007) and the Scale of Optimism by Barros de Oliveira (1998). The results allowed us to conclude that optimism, beliefs and hope have a positive correlation; females have higher average than males in beliefs; people that have attended university scored higher in optimism; the older you are, the higher you score on the optimism, beliefs and hope scales; faculty teachers scored higher on optimism, beliefs and hope; people that studied in fields related with education had more hope and people that practice mindfulness scored higher on the optimism scale. With this study, we concluded that spirituality and optimism showed significant results in higher education, with the same thing happening for gender, age, job/profession, mindfulness and education.
