Dar voz aos avós. Estudo qualitativo sobre perceções acerca da grã-parentalidade

Contrariamente ao que acontece com outras vivências do sistema familiar, a transição
para a grã-parentalidade continua a ser um acontecimento pouco estudado, de um ponto
de vista qualitativo, existindo uma lacuna na clarificação das dimensões específicas da
grã-parentalidade na ótica daqueles que a vivenciam – os avôs/avós. Deste modo, o
presente estudo tem como principais objetivos descrever e compreender as funções e
tarefas deste subsistema. Participaram nove avós do sexo masculino (n = 5) e do sexo
feminino (n = 4), residentes na Região Autónoma da Madeira, apresentando idades que
variam entre os 51 aos 77 anos (M = 64,8, DP = 9,4). A análise temática das entrevistas
semiestruturadas aos avós permitiu identificar três temas principais: (1) Transição para a
grã-parentalidade; (2) Vivências a grã-parentalidade e (3) Implicações e desafios da grã parentalidade. Os resultados, de um modo geral, evidenciaram que os avôs/avós
imaginavam e idealizavam a grã-parentalidade, como sendo um papel desejado e
expectável, que surgiria de forma espontânea e que se encontrava associado a emoções e
sentimentos positivos, onde os ganhos/vantagens, na ótica dos avôs/avós, foram muito
superiores comparativamente às dificuldades associadas a esse papel.
Contrary to what happens with other events in a family system, the transition to grandparenthood continues to be a poorly trained event, from a qualitative point of view, with a gap in the clarification of the specific dimensions of grandparenthood, from the perspective of those who experience it – grandparents. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to conceptualize and clarify the tasks and functions of this subsystem in a clearer way. Nine male (n = 5) and female (n = 4) grandparents participated, living in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with ages ranging from 51 to 77 years old (M = 64.8, SD = 9.4). The thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews with grandparents identified three main themes: (1) Transition to grandmother-parenthood; (2) Experiences of grandparenthood and (3) Implications and challenges of grandparenthood. The results, in general, showed that the grandfathers/grandmothers imagined and idealized grand parenthood, as being a desired and expected role, which would arise spontaneously and which was associated with positive emotions and feelings, where gains/ Advantages, from the perspective of grandparents, were much greater compared to the difficulties associated with this role.
