O porto de Lisboa frequentado, desde épocas remotas, por grande número de embar cações, tornou-se um local de encontro de marinheiros e mercadores provenientes de
diversas latitudes, o que facilitou a entrada na cidade de surtos pestíferos e a sua pro pagação a todo o reino. Este facto constituiu uma preocupação constante dos suces sivos monarcas portugueses e do governo da cidade em criar medidas que controlas sem a entrada e a protegessem das epidemias. O Regimento da Saúde de D. João III
(1526), redigido com base nas informações recolhidas em diversas cidades de Itália
pelo desembargador Pedro Vaz, demonstra a preocupação do monarca em preservar a
cidade e em atuar em caso de peste, tendo por base as providências seguidas por outras
localidades e portos. A análise deste documento normativo permitiu compreender a
sua abrangência ao nível da prevenção e controlo dos surtos epidémicos, e destacá-
