Definir arte é uma tarefa complexa porquanto o seu entendimento advém das perceções pessoais de quem o faz.
Deste modo, concetualizá-la pressupõe aceder aos múltiplos significados que a linguagem escrita lhes atribui.
É a partir deste exercício que nos propomos delinear a evolução do ensino das artes no Brasil, desde a sua perceção
enquanto mera atividade ocupacional até à sua assunção como disciplina escolar obrigatória.
As reflexões finais, com base no enquadramento legislativo e no contexto real em que o ensino das artes se efetiva,
conduzem-nos até àquele que consideramos ser o papel das artes na educação e sobretudo na (e para) a vida dos
indivíduos.
Defining art is a complex task because its understanding comes from the personal perceptions of who defines it. Thus, conceptualizing it presupposes access to a multiplicity of meanings that written language attributes to them. It is from this perspective that we propose to delineate the development of arts education in Brazil from its perception as a simple occupational activity to its assumption as a mandatory school subject. The final reflections, based on the legal framework and in the real context where the teaching of arts takes effect, lead us to what we believe to be the role of the arts in the education and particularly in the (and for) the lives of individuals.
