Abstract(s)
A amostra ficou
Over the past years in the academic literature, one can see that the self concept has been one of the constructs with higher growth and visibility in the field of research in Psychology. The present investigation had as main objective to understand if the student’s self-concept is coincident with the parents and teachers thoughts about it, in two learning establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. To that end, it has been used the Self-concept and Self-esteem Scale for adolescents of Peixoto and Almeida (1999) for the students sample, and one adaptation of this scale for parents and teachers in the Escola Básica dos 2 e 3º Ciclos Bartolomeu Perestrelo and in Externato da Apresentação de Maria. The sample consisted of 187 students (between the ages of 11 and 17 years old), 187 parents and 17 teachers. The results showed that in the student’s global self-concept there are no differences between genders, ages, social economic class or among students of public and private education. However in areas of self-concept in relation to students there are differences in some dimensions of self concept (athletic competence, physical appearance, behavior and close friendships) between genders, ages (close friendships) and students who attend public and private schools (areas of Social Acceptance, Mathematics Competence and Self-Esteem). It was still possible to see that teachers were closer to the student’s self-concept than parents.
