Abstract(s)
Cognitive impairment is associated with a lack of parenting skills to educate, supervise, and respond to children's needs, and if it has been important to monitor the effects of this condition, it is also necessary to intervene when parents face challenges that exceed their resources. Research suggests that interventions with parents with cognitive impairment should be adjusted to the level and intensity of the deficit, at home, individualized, and coordinated with other services in a step by-step approach and through the use of behavioral teaching strategies. Thus, it is intended to identify and analyze the main characteristics of parental education programs aimed at parents with cognitive impairment, their similarities and differences, correlating them with the results found and published in the last 20 years. A systematic review of the literature method was used, covering some databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, and SciELO, and the search was carried out between May and December 2023, encompassing studies published between 2003 and 2023 that include parental education programs aimed at parents with cognitive impairment. Seven programs met the established criteria and were incorporated into this study. The results show that the overwhelming majority of current parental education programs do not address the specificities of parents with cognitive impairment and, although they are available almost everywhere in the world, relatively few meet the needs of these parents.
