Abstract(s)
The changes in socioeconomic and cultural patterns have significantly altered the lifestyle of the current population. The objectives of the present study were: (1) To estimate the prevalence of the syndrome metabolic in youth and adult night education students, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil; and (2) To investigate the contribution of age, gender and (muscular strength / strength and motor and aerobic fitness), in explaining the variance of the sum of the risk factors for metabolic syndrome (FRSM). This is a cross-sectional study, which includes 241 adult students, 84 males and 157 females (30.2 10.1 years of age). Among men and women who were evaluated, 9.5% presented abdominal circumference above established criteria, 22% presented high values in relation to triglycerides, 48.8% had low HDL, 49% had blood pressure and 19.2% with high glucose. The total prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 16.7%. The regression model tested explained 18.3% of the total variance of FRSM. Motor fitness and muscle strength and endurance are significant predictors to consider for FRSM prevention regardless of age, gender and aerobic fitness. Physical Education classes should include a health education component, with the goal of reducing FRSM and promoting healthier lifestyles.
