Abstract(s)
Given the limited research done on the motivation to study in a prison setting, and their limitations, the main objective of this study is to explore the perceptions about this motivation both by inmates themselves and by the prison community. The objectives of this study are centered on an analysis of inmates' motivation to study within the prison context, specifically, to explore the perceptions of the penitentiary community. A qualitative methodology was used, where a semi-open interviews were applied, through the technique of the focus group, to a group of 15 people from the community of the Prison Establishment of Funchal (teachers and students). The study revealed that the motivation to study, within the prison context, is intrinsically oriented towards participation in training "for pleasure, coupled with the practical conditions of development and the training environment. The information obtained gives a clear idea of the factors that facilitate and block access to education from the perspective of three different groups. With this information, it will be easier to develop strategies to promote student involvement in the prison context as well as teachers.
