- Educational qualifications and wage inequality: evidence for EuropePublication . Budría, Santiago; Pereira, Pedro TelhadoIn this paper we investigate the connection between education and wage inequality in nine European countries. We exploit the quantile regression technique to calculate returns to lower secondary, upper secondary and tertiary education at different points of the wage distribution. Using data from the last few decades, we describe changes in the conditional wage distribution of the surveyed countries. We find that in most European countries the amount of conditional wage dispersion within education groups is substantially higher and has grown faster among college-edu cated workers than among less educated workers
- Portuguese migrants in the German labor market: selection and performancePublication . Bauer, Thomas; Pereira, Pedro T.; Vogler, Michael; Zimmermann, Klaus F.The labor market performance of Portuguese workers in Germany is analyzed in this article. While previous work has compared wages and char acteristics of migrants to natives only, this study also matches the data set with an equivalent survey from the sending country. The findings show that Portuguese migrants as a whole are negatively selected, with the exception of blue-collar workers, the largest group among the movers. The finding that Portuguese migrants earn more than comparable Ger mans indicates that they have higher unobservable skills.
