Abstract(s)
The grandparental subsystem plays a fundamental role in family dynamics and experiences. However, there are few assessment instruments available to evaluate the grandparent grandchild relationship. The main objective of this study was to adapt a parent-child communication assessment scale to the grandparent population (Grandparent Communication Assessment Scale, COMGRA) and conduct initial psychometric studies. In this study, 194 grandparents participated, aged between 40 and 91 years (M = 68.80, SD = 8.66). They completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the COMGRA, and the SCORE 15. Exploratory factor analysis for the 44 items revealed a three-factor structure with adequate levels of internal consistency (α = .94). The analysis of convergent validity (correlations between the COMGRA Total score and the SCORE-15 subscales) indicated that grandparent-grandchild communication (COMGRA) had a moderate relationship with family functioning, specifically in terms of family difficulties, family resources, and family communication (SCORE-15). Despite the importance of ongoing with validation studies for the COMGRA scale, the preliminary results of this study suggest that this is a promising instrument for a better understanding of grandparent-grandchild relationships.
