Abstract(s)
Sustainability promotion in the tourism and hospitality industry is intrinsically linked to fair working conditions, gender equality and women's empowerment. Considering that most of the workforce in this sector is made up of women, it is imperative to recognize that although the field of tourism offers vast opportunities to promote gender equality and empowerment, significant inequalities tend to persist between men and women. To find effective solutions, it is crucial to deepen existing knowledge and therefore it is essential to examine the progress of research related to gender equality over the years. The objective of this work is to analyze the conclusions of several researchers on this topic and evaluate whether these conclusions apply to the hotel sector in the Madeira region. To achieve this purpose, a systematic review of the available scientific literature will be conducted, which will be based on a comprehensive review of studies on gender equality in the context of tourism and hospitality. Surveys will be conducted among employees of several hotels in the region with the aim of investigating their perceptions and feelings regarding gender equality in their organization's environment. The data collected will be subjected to a detailed analysis to identify the existence or not of vertical and/or horizontal segregation in the employment context in the hotel sector.
