Abstract(s)
A popular tale and two traditional novels have been collected from a 97-year old storyteller from Ponta Delgada, São Vicente municipality, Madeira Island. The art of storytelling requires memory and the gift of telling images and giving life, with rhythm and liveliness, to a narrative interspersed with direct speech. One’s attention focuses on the discursive aspect of language in the oral transmission of stories that cross over from generation to generation by means of memory as these stories become modified in accordance to the storyteller’s everyday life reality and to her listeners who give them new life at the time of recitation. Not only will the main variants of the different Madeiran versions of the stories as narrative variations inseparable from language itself - thus rendering the antiquity of this popular oral tradition - be mentioned, but also the role of memory in the transmission and consequent transformation of the narrative. Hence the fact of oral literature or popular literature being also called “memorial literature” as it dwells in the thread of the memory of who narrates and who hears. Its characteristics come from the very nature of oral transmission, with the abundance of linguistic-discursive variants and ellipses or omissions and additions that result from the transformations of the stories in time and space.
