Abstract(s)
desempenho empresarial.
This study aims to examine the direct impact of exports on the business performance of Portuguese food sector companies, as well as the indirect impact driven by the motivations and barriers to their internationalization. Data were collected through two methods: primary data from questionnaires and secondary data from the Informa D&B database. A total of 312 valid surveys were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis to identify the motivations and barriers to internationalization, followed by multiple linear regression to evaluate their impact on business performance. The results indicate that proactive and market-driven motivations, as well as business capacity motivations, are the primary drivers of internationalization for Portuguese food companies. On the other hand, commercial risks, as well as market and political risks act as key barriers to this process. From the econometric results, the degree of export intensity has a direct and positive correlation with business performance. However, intra community exports within the Portuguese food sector have a negative impact on business performance, whereas exports to countries outside the European Union have a positive effect. Furthermore, business capacity motivations positively influence business performance, unlike proactive and market-driven motivations. Market and political risks have a negative impact on business performance, while commercial risks have an opposite effect. These findings offer significant theoretical and practical implications, aiding in the identification of the main motivations and barriers to internationalization in this sector and their impact on business performance, contributing to filling gaps in literature.
