Abstract(s)
This master's internship with report aims to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired in the curricular part of the master's degree. In this sense, within the scope of the 2nd Cycle in Linguistics: Societies and Cultures, the internship was carried out at Madeira Island Magazine (MIM). This is published online and on paper, distributed free of charge in hotels, restaurants, museums, tourist entertainment companies and tourist offices in the region, with its cost being paid for by the advertising of the sponsor companies. It is a bimonthly bilingual (Portuguese-English) magazine promoting events, festivities, cultural heritage, traditions, geology, fauna and flora, leisure areas, sports activities, and recipes from Madeira. The working methodology used was the survey and research on regional themes to be included in the magazine, of interest to residents and tourists of the Madeira archipelago. Various data collection methods were used, such as observing current affairs, consulting updated bibliography and conducting interviews. Therefore, the internship activity mainly involved research on topics such as nature, Madeiran products, sports and heritage, with the aim of writing short articles for the magazine. Interviews were carried out with people from different areas, allowing the disclosure of various issues regarding society and culture in Madeira. As it is a magazine aimed mainly at tourists, the texts of the articles written and the interviews transcribed from Portuguese to English and from English to Portuguese were translated. In the translation, issues related to the bilingual publication and the socio-cultural realities of Madeira were dealt with. The publication of the texts also implied that linguistic revision and editing were worked on.
