Abstract(s)
Over time attention has been paid to the study of gender issues and also to eminent women, ie, women that excell in areas and contexts recognized by society as highly competitive and requiring a high level of expertise. However, some factors have emerged in literature as inhibitors of success while these women are engaging in a professional activity suggesting that some of them might need counseling to help them to cope with the adversities and to build a career project. And, if so, society does not become deprived of the contribution that they may offer. Therefore, through a case study, the main purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze the characteristics and the life trajectories of college honors students, and understand the factors that seem to condition success, employment and career building. Participants were five women awarded with honors scholarships by a Portuguese public university, between the academic years 1999/2000 to 2012/2013. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and NEO-PI-R, Revised NEO Personality Inventory. The interviews were analyzed through content analysis and individual profiles of the traits assessed by NEO-PI-R were made. The results reveal, despite some idiosyncrasies, presence of common personal and contextual factors considered fundamental for the emergence and maintenance of excellence in adulthood, such us: personality (e.g. openness to experience, counscientiousness); motivation (e.g. passion); cognition (e.g. self-regulation). However, these women do not seem to have, so far, professional success recognized as exceptional. Aspects such as multipotenciality, difficulty in managing roles inside and outside the career, opportunities and personal ambitions seem to have conditioned investment in their careers. We conclude with the presentation of the limitations of the investigation and with some suggestions for future studies.
