Abstract(s)
Demographic ageing is a challenge that has been the subject of study in contemporary society in recent years. Everyone tries to understand ageing and intervene to reduce its natural effects, avoiding the exclusion of the elderly person. In Portugal and in more modern societies, the great development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has led to a greater dependence for dealing with everyday issues. This research aims to identify the sociocultural factors that influence the choice of ICT learning, in populations 50+ and to know the impacts of this learning on well-being throughout the ageing process. A descriptive exploratory research of qualitative and quantitative nature was carried out with a sample of 374 participants who attended senior universities in the Castelo Branco district. The data collection tools used were questionnaires to the aforementioned participants and semi-structured interviews with five directors and five ICT professors from these senior universities. The results show that the factors that explain the choice for ICT learning are related to the updating of knowledge, the need to be intellectually active and to better use the computer, with positive impacts, namely on memory, intellectual skills, communication with family members and friends and digital inclusion.
