Neste artigo pretendemos mostrar como a Linguística pode contribuir para o estudo da rota e da terminologia açucareiras do Mediterrâneo ao Atlântico, complementando os conhecimentos históricos. Começámos por realizar um estudo diacrónico sobre a origem e o percurso histórico e geográfico da terminologia açucareira, determinando as palavras oriundas do Mediterrâneo como trapiche e as palavras que surgiram na ilha da Madeira, com o grande desenvolvimento da produção açucareira, como açúcar de panela e rapadura, que se difundiram no Atlântico. Posteriormente, o estudo sincrónico da terminologia açucareira atual do Atlântico permite-nos conhecer a reminiscência dos termos da antiga produção açucareira madeirense e a sua vitalidade, como é o caso da palavra rapadura, conservada na ilha de La Palma (nas Canárias) e no Brasil.
In this article we aim to show how linguistics can contribute to studies of the sugar route and sugar terminology from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, complementing historical knowledge. We begin with a timeline study of the historical and geographical evolution of sugar terminology, picking out words of Mediterranean origin, such as trapiche, and juxtaposing words which arose on the island of Madeira, due to its large sugar production, such as azucar de panela and rapadura, and which spread within the Atlantic islands. After that, a simultaneous study of the present day terminology in the Atlantic allows us to become familiar with the vitality of terms which came from the former sugar production on Madeira, and their continuing vitality, as in the example of the word rapadura, still in use on the island of La Palma (Canary isles) and in Brazil.
