Abstract(s)
o estudo.
Nowadays, in the most diverse types of constructions, some cases of application of glass in which it takes on a structural function begin to appear. Although its application is currently not so extensive, it is believed that this is because it is a material that presents some brittleness, and the research carried out and the standards available are still scarce, compared to the most common construction materials, such as the concrete and steel. Glass is an isotropic material, it has an elastic behavior, it is resistant when it is in the solid state, but it is extremely brittle, as already mentioned. It can be transparent, translucent or shiny, it depends on the amounts of its basic constituents. This dissertation intends to present the material itself, in terms of chemical, physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. There are several types of glass that can be found on the market, as well as the fixing systems used in their applications. Even if the application of glass with a structural function is not so extensive, there are some examples in Portugal and in the Madeira Island. The glass is a material that has been studied in recent decades as a material to be applied in construction with a structural function. Thus, it is possible to check some examples of studies in this dissertation. Some standards for the design of glass elements are addressed, namely EN 16612 and CNR DT 210. Tables and graphs are also proposed that aim to help the choice, in terms of thickness and dimensions of structural elements, such as beams, columns, glass fins, panels applied to floors, roofs and facades. Finally, the above mentioned tables and graphs are applied to a case study. case study. It has an all-glass structure, with two floors, where the structural elements (beams, columns, glass fins, floors and facades) are dimensioned in accordance with the standards adopted for the study.
