Abstract(s)
área a investigação é ainda incipiente.
In recent years research has shown the importance of self-determination in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental difficulties (DID), underlining that these people must have the possibility to be informed, to participate and work in their communities, taking their own decisions and making their choices. Although the existing studies highlight the importance of promoting self-determination in people with DID, as well as the important role that professionals and the family can offer in this area, research is still incipient. This study aims to describe and analyze the perceptions of a group of eight adult participants with DID, comparing their perceptions with those of their Parents and Technicians who work with them in an Occupational Activity Center (CAO). For this purpose, the ARC-INICO Scale (Verdugo et al., 2014) was used to assess the self-determination of participants with DID and two questionnaires built from ARC-INICO, which were applied to Parents and Technicians. The results reveal that male participants with DID have more positive perceptions of self determination than female participants with DID. It was found that EE and TE have favorable perceptions regarding the self-determination of their students. Finally, that participants with DID tend to self-assess their self-determination skills more positively than their educators. It is hoped that this study can contribute to a reflection on the need to evaluate and promote self determination skills among people with DID.
