dc.description.abstractThe present report aims to detail the activities undertaken during the curricular traineeship in Translation and research project developed at the Centre for Atlantic History Studies — Alberto Vieira (CEHA-AV), of the Madeira Archives and Library Department (DRABM). As a starting point, a theoretical and methodological framework was followed within the scope of Lexicology, where Onomastics is included, i.e., the study of proper names, as both the host entity (in the person of Dr Filipe dos Santos, traineeship supervisor) and the University of Madeira (in the person of Professor Doctor Naidea Nunes Nunes, scientific supervisor) were interested in the analysis and description of data from the parish marriage records (starting with those of Santa Cruz) previously compiled by DRABM, and which had benefited from a spelling update and standardisation for online research purposes. The methodology used was a comparative study between masculine and feminine names by centuries, observing their evolution as individual names as well as the composition of family names. The availability of data from other parishes (Ribeira Brava, Sé, and Caniço) also enabled for comparison between them by centuries, discussing possible similarities and differences. The traineeship also included the translation from Portuguese to English of four photographic catalogues — two on Madeira Embroidery and two on Clothing used in Madeira Island. Furthermore, there were occasions when linguistic revision and editing (sometimes even translation) of the Portuguese and English versions of prefaces, abstracts, and excerpts from scientific articles to be published in the annual journal Arquivo Histórico da Madeira, Nova Série were required.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractO presente relatório visa detalhar as atividades realizadas durante o estágio curricular em tradução e o projeto de investigação desenvolvidos no Centro de Estudos de História do Atlântico — Alberto Vieira (CEHA-AV), da Direção Regional do Arquivo e Biblioteca da Madeira (DRABM). Partiu-se de um quadro teórico e metodológico no âmbito da Lexicologia, onde se enquadra a Onomástica, ou seja, o estudo dos nomes próprios, uma vez que a entidade de acolhimento do estágio (na pessoa do Dr. Filipe dos Santos, supervisor do estágio), assim como a Universidade da Madeira (na pessoa da Professora Doutora Naidea Nunes Nunes, orientadora), estava interessada na análise e descrição de dados dos registos paroquiais de nubentes, começando pelos de Santa Cruz, já compilados pela DRABM, com atualização e normalização da escrita por motivos de pesquisa online. A metodologia utilizada foi um estudo comparativo entre nomes masculinos e femininos por séculos, observando a sua evolução enquanto nomes individuais, assim como a composição dos nomes de famílias. A disponibilização de dados de outras paróquias (Ribeira Brava, Sé e Caniço) permitiu também a elaboração de uma comparação por séculos entre elas, com discussão de possíveis semelhanças e diferenças. O estágio incluiu também a tradução de português para inglês de quatro catálogos fotográficos — dois sobre a história dos bordados e dois sobre o vestuário, ambos na ilha da Madeira. Além disso, houve ocasiões em que foi necessária a revisão e edição linguística (por vezes até tradução) das versões portuguesa e inglesa de prefácios, resumos e excertos de artigos científicos a serem publicados na revista anual Arquivo Histórico da Madeira, Nova Série.pt_PT
