Abstract(s)
The growing ageing of the population is associated with an increase in cases of dementia. Due to the difficulties associated with this pathology, namely limitations in terms of communication, memory and autonomy, people with dementia are more likely to be hospitalised for falls and infections compared to individuals without dementia. However, inpatient services are not always prepared to meet the needs of these patients. This study aims to conduct an integrated review of the literature on the hospitalisation of people with dementia. The search was carried out in the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, being the last survey conducted on January 24th, 2020. Twelve articles were found on the hospitalisation of elderly people with dementia. In general, the hospitalisation of elderly people with dementia was a negative event in these patients’ lives, with important repercussions on their quality of life, dependence and mortality. The literature states the need to create conditions for these hospitalisations, through in situ protocols. Further studies on this subject are essential to understand how to prevent adverse outcomes and increase the dignity and quality of life of people with dementia.
