e as transformações decorrentes deste encontro cultural.
This master's thesis analyzes cultural diversity in Pearl S. Buck's novel East Wind: West Wind, a literary work that explores the encounter between Chinese traditions and Western American values. The narrative depicts the clash between these two cultures, highlighting the tensions and transformations arising from this cultural encounter. Through a detailed reading of the novel, we seek to understand how it is possible to explore different cultures, identities, and worldviews, and how the work problematizes issues of relativism, cultural difference, and hybridity. The focus is on the characters' journeys and experiences, highlighting the complexities of cultural identities and the challenges of integration. We begin with the story of Kwei-Lan's family to analyze how the novel presents a multiplicity of characters with different visions, beliefs, and values, offering a complex portrait of 20th-century Chinese and Western culture. This study also shows how the work presents itself as a field of investigation into the complex relationships between East and West, but also into the challenges and opportunities that arise from the encounter between two distinct cultures.
