| dc.description.abstract | A presente dissertação de mestrado analisa a diversidade cultural no romance East Wind: West Wind (Vento do Oriente, Vento do Ocidente), de Pearl S. Buck, uma obra literária que explora o encontro entre as tradições chinesas e os valores ocidentais da América. A narrativa mostra o confronto entre estas duas culturas, onde destaca as tensões e as transformações decorrentes deste encontro cultural. Através de uma leitura detalhada do romance, procura-se compreender como é possível explorar as diferentes culturas, identidades e visões do mundo e como a obra problematiza as questões de relativismo, diferença cultural e hibridismo. O foco recai no percurso das personagens e nas suas experiências, o que realça as complexidades das identidades culturais e os desafios da integração. Partimos da história da família de Kwei-Lan, para analisar o modo como o romance apresenta uma multiplicidade de personagens com diferentes visões, crenças e valores distintos, oferecendo um retrato complexo da cultura chinesa e ocidental do século XX. | dc.description.abstract | This master's thesis analyzes cultural diversity in Pearl S. Buck's novel East Wind: West Wind, a literary work that explores the encounter between Chinese traditions and Western American values. The narrative depicts the clash between these two cultures, highlighting the tensions and transformations arising from this cultural encounter. Through a detailed reading of the novel, we seek to understand how it is possible to explore different cultures, identities, and worldviews, and how the work problematizes issues of relativism, cultural difference, and hybridity. The focus is on the characters' journeys and experiences, highlighting the complexities of cultural identities and the challenges of integration. We begin with the story of Kwei-Lan's family to analyze how the novel presents a multiplicity of characters with different visions, beliefs, and values, offering a complex portrait of 20th-century Chinese and Western culture. This study also shows how the work presents itself as a field of investigation into the complex relationships between East and West, but also into the challenges and opportunities that arise from the encounter between two distinct cultures. | eng |
