consagrados escritores do panorama literário português: Agustina Bessa-Luís e João
Aguiar.
No primeiro capítulo (“Ópera I: Viriato”), a escritora invoca a
C., a morte e o
This dissertation examines the historical and literary figure of Viriathus (who lived during the Lusitanian Wars in the 2nd century BC) from the perspective of two renowned authors in Portuguese literature: Agustina Bessa-Luís and João Aguiar. In Fama e Segredo na História de Portugal (2006), Bessa-Luís recounts the lives of notable figures in Portuguese history, beginning with Viriathus and ending with Salazar. In the opening chapter (“Ópera I: Viriato”), the author evokes the memory of her grandfather, during a trip to Zamora, to compose the biography of the Lusitanian hero, selecting and commenting on relevant episodes such as his origins, marriage, war against the Romans, the peace treaty with Rome in 140 BC, his death, and the crime of Galba. A Voz dos Deuses (1984), by João Aguiar, is a historical novel narrated in the form of memoirs. The narrator is a fictional character, Tongio, a young man who accompanies Viriathus in the fight against successive Roman generals during the final years before the leader‟s death in 139 BC. This study therefore explores how Bessa-Luís and Aguiar reconstruct Viriathus‟ biography and the cultural context in which he lived, weaving together fact and fiction through both historical reality and literary invention, while acknowledging the inherent fallibility of their subject matter.
