Abstract(s)
gratificante.
There is a thematic constellation representative of the stories about university students from the Island of Madeira travelling to the Portuguese Mainland in pursuit of a higher degree. Aiming at a sketch of it, the present approach is based on the reading of two novels by the Madeiran writer Horácio Bento de Gouveia, namely Canga which was first published in 1949 under the title of Ilhéus; and Águas Mansas published in 1963. In both these works of insular memory on the youth and life paths of Manuel Esmeraldo in Canga and Pedro Simões in Águas Mansas, there are nevertheless significant auto biographical refractions of the author. With the enactment of their move from an island background – Madeira Island – to the capital city of the country – Lisbon – Bento de Gouveia manages to incorporate in these formation novels reflections and traits of behaviour and mentality that witness the clash with another reality. It is at times a challenge of oneself while at others a rewarding experience.
