Abstract(s)
In 1994, the City Council of Funchal, officially created the Ecological Park of Funchal, starting from the beginning a set of measures and actions, with the main objectives of nature conservation, the promotion of biodiversity and environmental education actions and the replacement of the areas occupied by invasive species to native species. In 2010 and 2016, two large-scale forest fires affected a huge part of the Ecological Park’s surface area, which severely affected the existing vegetation and all the work previously done. The works to recover the biodiversity after the fire is a great opportunity to foster scientific literacy and the skills of schoolchildren in the natural sciences, as well to stimulate the development of skills to solve environmental problems directly related to the local reality. Currently the great challenge is the management of invasive alien species, which are one of the greatest threats to island ecosystems. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a better understanding to the population on the impacts of the introduction of these species and to develop knowledge, attitudes and behaviors that allow them to contribute and mitigate the problem.
