Atletismo é uma matéria de ensino que faz parte das matérias nucleares dos Programas Nacionais de Educação Física (PNEF). Contudo, o nível inicial de conhecimentos e performance demonstrado pelos alunos que frequentam a Unidade Curricular (UC) de Estudos Práticos I – Atletismo, do 1º ano da licenciatura em Educação Física (EF) e Desporto da Universidade da Madeira, paradoxalmente parece ser muito baixo. O que convenhamos não é propriamente uma grande surpresa (Gonçalves & Lopes, 2016). Considerando que para que se compreendam os fenómenos na sua globalidade é necessário equacionar os problemas sobre diferentes perspetivas, entendemos necessário conhecer e analisar as perceções dos alunos ao nível do seu desempenho na primeira UC que na sua formação inicial como futuros profissionais de EF e Desporto, aborda expressamente o Atletismo. Assim, realizámos um estudo exploratório com o objetivo de (1) compreender a perceção dos alunos sobre os Estudos Páticos I - Atletismo; (2) obter informações sobre as dificuldades sentidas pelos alunos no decorrer desta Unidade Curricular e (3) analisar em que medida o nível de conhecimento dos alunos relativamente à matéria de ensino de Atletismo se afasta do que é expetável após a escolaridade obrigatória. A amostra foi constituída por 44 alunos da referida licenciatura que responderam a um questionário aberto, elaborado especificamente para o efeito e que frequentaram mais de 75% das 48h da UC. Foi possível verificar que os alunos atribuem importância à UC, que conseguem ter uma adequada perceção das suas dificuldades e que os alunos chegam ao Ensino Superior com um nível de conhecimento (teórico e prático) muito abaixo do que é expetável para uma matéria de ensino que o PNEF considera de elevada importância, “admitindo que lhe seja atribuída uma maior carga horária”. Lamentavelmente, estamos, mais uma vez, perante um claro desfasamento entre o discurso e o percurso.
Athletics is a subject of instruction that is part of the core subjects of the National Programs of Physical Education (NPPE). However, the initial level of knowledge and performance demonstrated by students attending the Curricular Unit (CU) of Practical Studies I - Athletics, the 1st year of the degree in Physical Education (PE) and Sports of the University of Madeira, paradoxically seems to be very low. What we agree with, is not exactly a big surprise (Gonçalves and Lopes, 2016). Considering that in order to understand the phenomena in their entirety it is necessary to address the problems on different perspectives, we understand it necessary to know and analyze the perceptions of the students at the level of their performance in the first CU that in their initial formation as future professionals of PE and Sport, specifically addresses Athletics. Thus, we carried out an exploratory study with the objective of (1) understanding students' perceptions about the practical studies I - Athletics; (2) to obtain information about the difficulties experienced by the students during this Course and (3) to analyze the extent to which the level of knowledge of the students regarding the subject of Athletics education departs from what can be expelled after compulsory schooling. The sample consisted of 44 undergraduate students who answered an open questionnaire, specifically designed for this purpose and who attended more than 75% of the 48 hours of the CU. It was possible to verify that the students attribute importance to the CU, that they are able to have an adequate perception of their difficulties and that the students reach the Higher Education with a level of knowledge (theoretical and practical) well below what is possible for a subject of teaching that The NPPE considers it of great importance, "assuming that it is assigned a greater workload".
