Abstract(s)
Participaram no estudo 2 estudantes
universitários (1 homem e 1 mulher), voluntários numa associação dedicada às
perturbações do desenvolvimento.
Higher education must provide opportunities for students not only to develop professional skills but also soft skills, both valued by the current labor market. As voluntary work seems to facilitate the development of these skills, some universities have encouraged their students to have a more active social participation in several areas. In this paper we analyse the importance of voluntary work in higher education for professional training, personal development and the attitude of students towards people with special needs. The participants were 2 college students (1 man and 1 woman), volunteers at an association focused on developmental disorders. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and were organized using content analysis. The results suggest that voluntary work denotes gains for the volunteer and for people with special needs, and also challenges the performance of the volunteer. In addition, the results reveal the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for the beginning and for the continuity of volunteering, and they reveal the potential of this social practice in the promotion of inclusion. These data are discussed and are presented some reflections that can be considered in future studies.
