Quando se pensa em escultura grega, as representações que preenchem imaginário colectivo evocam a
beleza superior das divindades pagãs, a esmerada perfeição física dos corpos de atletas vencedores ou a
etérea formosura de jovens mulheres. De uma “estátua grega” não se espera, em geral, a representação
de um ser humano envelhecido. O presente artigo propõe-se explorar este tema, procurando sondar até
que ponto será esta percepção correcta, que razões terão levado os Gregos a evitar, em parte significativa
do seu percurso civilizacional, representar plasticamente a velhice na escultura monumental e, por fim,
quando e porquê começaram a fazê-lo. Para concluir, ilustrar-se-á o desenvolvimento da representação
escultórica da velhice com quatro exemplos, todos de figuras masculinas, dois relevos funerários e duas
esculturas de vulto redondo, que serão, em momento próprio, objecto de um breve comentário.
When one thinks about Greek sculpture, the representations that fill the collective imagination evoke the superior beauty of pagan deities, the painstaking physical perfection of the bodies of winning athletes or the ethereal beauty of young women. From a "Greek statue”, one does not expect, in general, the representation of an ageing human being. This article aims to explore this issue, trying to probe to what extent is this perception accurate, what are the reasons that have led the Greeks, in a significant part of their civilizational route, to avoid plastically represent the old age in monumental sculpture and, finally, when, and why they started to do so. To conclude, we will illustrate the development of the sculptural representation of old age with four examples, all of them of male figures, two funerary reliefs and two sculptures of round figures, which will, in due course, be the object of a brief commentary.
