19th and early 20th century Europe showed a relevant interest in the psychological sciences and scientific research when related to the development of concepts such as health, mental health, illness, therapy, psychological normality, abnormality, hysteria, insanity, among others. However, at the same time, intellectuals and scientists felt a great attraction towards other somehow related fields, such as parapsychology and spiritualism. In fact, scientific culture and parapsychology often coexisted in an attempt to explain the human being in its most hidden and questionable aspects. This approximation between psychological culture and parapsychology captivated, in different ways, several authors. It also inspired and affected, in the case of European writers, such as Pirandello or Fogazzaro, and Madeiran writers, such as Reis Gomes or Vasco Mimoso (director of A Regeneração), the construction of scenarios, atmospheres and characters. In fact, the common interest for science, mysticism and parapsychology led them to direct the gnoseological tension to the analysis and study of the less clear and visible part of the human being.
